Getting Started in EPP

Familiarise yourself with Spaces we Occupy

This includes the basement computer and hardware lab (located in the basement of the photonuclear building), the student offices on the third floor (rooms 301, 302, 303), the post-doc office on the third floor (room 307) and staff offices (located on the fifth and seventh floors). Speak to your supervisor about which office you will be working in and the keys you will need to get. Other students can help sort out desk allocation.

Getting Started Checklist

There are Orientation folders are available from level 1 Reception for new students, staff and visitors.

Information for students about getting started can be found online at 2520 Cups of Coffee A Survival Guide for Postgraduate Physics Students. This guide is aimed at new postgrads but the first chapter `Getting Started' is useful for anyone new to the School.

You should follow this check list:

  1. Get keys:
Get your supervisor or head of group to send the Executive Manager ( Helen Conley) an email requesting keys and swipe cards (building card, lab key, office key). You will then be notified when you can pick up your keys from the building supervisor and your swipe card from Cilla in the level 1 office. You will need to pay a deposit for these at the front desk.
  2. Get a central account:
You will need to get a computer account on the main physics computer - baker. See the IT guys on the 4th floor about this.
  3. Get an EPP account:
These are the computers in the basement lab and in the student offices. See Glenn Moloney or Martin Sevior about this.
  4. Get an EPP web account:
From secure locations (Uni and international Labs) you can click here to register then Martin will eventually give you access to the EPP internal pages. These are all based the "twiki" web product which allows registered users to alter the web pages easily. Once logged in you can click on the Settings button at the top of any page to change or reset your password.

Once you have a twiki account feel free to edit these pages to correct any inaccuracies you find. You are also welcome and encouraged to create your own set of web pages behind http://epp.ph.unimelb.edu.au/twiki/bin/EppPrivate

  1. Sign up to the EPP mailing list:
As a new UniMelb student or staff member you should be subscribed automatically to the epp mailing list. However, if you need to you can click here to subscribe to EPP. You will be sent an email. You must reply to it for confirmation.
Note: Your email address is usually loginname@physics.unimelb.edu.au
  2. Safety, Safety, Safety:
Familiarise yourself with department and EPP safety.

Group Meetings

Group meetings are generally held on a Wednesday at 1:15pm, in the basement. Usually we just go round the table and find out what each person has been doing during the week. Its a good opportunity to get to know people in the group and to make sure that you are up to date with important info for the group. All students are expected to attend. Minutes are on the web.

EPP Intranet Pages

You will need to access some password protected pages such as meeting minutes, travel page etc. You will have your own web login and password to access the intranet site (see step 5 above), but some pages require an additional password. Ask someone in the group if you have trouble.

Ask Questions and Enjoy Yourself

The group is a friendly group. If you have any questions at all just ask another student in the group. We were all new at some stage. We often have group lunches (when someone is going overseas), afternoon drinks in the lab,or coffee at Brunetti's. Everyone is always welcome.
